Sleep Dentistry & IV Sedation

Some patients need more than a calming chat and a gentle touch to feel comfortable in the dental chair. If you have significant dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or need more extensive treatment completed in one visit, IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry) may be the right option for you.

Margaret River Dental works with the same specialist anaesthetist as our sister practice, Perth Sleep Dentistry, and offers IV Sedation at the same pricing — so you get the same trusted care, wherever you see us.

What Is IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry)?

IV Sedation allows you to feel as though you are having a relaxing sleep, leaving you with little to no memory of the appointment. Once the sedation is administered you will be monitored closely and become unaware of the sights, sounds and smells around you. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

A specialist medical anaesthetist administers the IV Sedation, so you may also be eligible to claim a Medicare rebate.

Our Anaesthetist

Our IV Sedation is administered by Dr Murray Jacobs, who has been practising in Perth since graduating in 1985. Murray holds a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and a Diploma in Anaesthetics from the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is extremely experienced and well known for his calm, reassuring manner — helping put patients at ease before treatment.

What Does IV Sedation Cost?

The cost of IV Sedation is based on the overall treatment time, and matches the pricing at Perth Sleep Dentistry. The table below shows the fee, the Medicare benefit, and the cost after your rebate:

  • 1 Hour — Fee $575, Medicare Benefit $235, Cost After Rebate $340

  • 1.5 Hours — Fee $850, Medicare Benefit $275, Cost After Rebate $575

  • 2 Hours — Fee $1,100, Medicare Benefit $310, Cost After Rebate $790

  • 2.5 Hours — Fee $1,400, Medicare Benefit $370, Cost After Rebate $1,030

  • 3 Hours — Fee $1,700, Medicare Benefit $425, Cost After Rebate $1,275

In addition to the above, a charge of $200 and $150 is made to cover the cost of drugs and consumables used during sedation. If your treatment needs aren’t covered above, get in touch and we can provide a personalised quote.

Prefer a Lighter Option? Laughing Gas

If your anxiety is milder, or you’d simply like to feel a little more relaxed during treatment, we also offer laughing gas (nitrous oxide) — a gentle sedation option suitable for both adults and children, with no lasting effects. Find out more on our Laughing Gas page.
